BusinessFlex and Hosted IP PBX Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is VoIP and how does it work?
BusinessFlex and Hosted IP PBX are two forms of Voice over IP (VoIP) service. VoIP is an Internet phone system that allows subscribers to make and receive calls using their high-speed Internet connection. The technology behind Voice over IP service converts voice into little packets of data so that it can be sent over the Internet using high-speed or fiber connection.

Q: What is BusinessFlex exactly?
TouchTone BusinessFlex is a SIP-based VoIP (Voice over IP) service that allows subscribers to make and receive calls using their data network instead of a standard phone line. SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) allows businesses that have IP-capable phone systems to combine their voice and data onto one circuit.

Trunks, or channels, are subscribed to according to the number of anticipated simultaneous calls that a subscriber plans to make and receive at any given time. Unlike traditional phone service, trunks can be issued in single increments and can be moved, added, and removed as needed. With BusinessFlex customers never have to pay for something they don’t need or use ever again. Learn More

Q: What is Hosted IP PBX?
TouchTone Hosted IP PBX is an Internet based phone service that delivers the functions and features of an expensive and sophisticated PBX phone system, but at the fraction of the cost.

TouchTone’s Hosted product combines voice and data onto one circuit allowing subscribers to make and receive calls, as well as access the Internet, over a single network.

One of the main benefits of Hosted IP PBX is that TouchTone hosts the PBX server for you. This means that you don’t need to purchase and maintain costly telecom equipment. Learn More

Q: Is BusinessFlex (SIP Trunking) or Hosted IP PBX right for me?
TouchTone’s Hosted IP PBX solution is perfect for customers looking to replace, update or install a new PBX or Centrex system; while SIP Trunking is more suited for those businesses who are looking to use their current phone system but would like to take advantage of some of VoIP's countless benefits.

High-speed Internet, DSL cable, or fiber connection is required. You can purchase connection through TouchTone and save even more, or through another ISP.

Q: For BusinessFlex (SIP Trunking), what kind of equipment do I need?

No hardware, equipment, or technical expertise is required. TouchTone SIP Trunking works with most IP capable phone systems and traditional analog phones.

IP Eligible Phone Systems:
• IP PBXs
• TDM PBXs
• Legacy CPE

If your telephone system does not have SIP Trunking capabilities, an inexpensive IAD device will be required. To learn more, please call 800.266.4006 to speak with a VoIP Consultant.

Q: What kind of equipment do I need for TouchTone Hosted product?
Equipment will vary on the customer and their requirements (for example, is the customer looking to
replace, update, or install a new PBX or Centrex system). To receive a complimentary analysis of your business needs, please call 877.888.6471 to speak with a TouchTone VoIP consultant.

Q: Can I keep my current number?
In most cases you can keep your existing telephone number. To check availability, please call TouchTone Customer Service at 800-266-4006.

Q: Who can I call?

Anyone who has a phone - this includes calls made to local, long distance, international, and mobile telephone numbers.

Q: Can I make calls while I’m browsing the Internet?

Yes. VoIP will not interfere with your other broadband-based services (Internet access, etc.). You can make Internet phone calls or send a fax while browsing the Internet, however, upstream data traffic passing through your Internet connection may affect the quality of your telephone call.

Q: What does E-911 compliant mean?

TouchTone VoIP is E-911 (Enhanced 911) compliant, a helpful free feature that provides customers with reliable 911 services (where available).

911 calls are routed to designated Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) such as your local or county police, fire and rescue departments. E-911 automatically provides PSAPs with the telephone number of the 911 call, and is also capable of transmitting the customer's name and home address to assist in dispatching emergency care. For more information, visit the VoIP 911: It's Different section of this Web site.

Q: Can I make calls if my Internet connection is down?

No, your high-speed Internet connection must be active to place Internet phone calls. If you require immediate assistance please call TouchTone Customer Service at 800-266-4006.
